Frank Miller is very well known, more so now because of the popularity of the movie adaptation of Sin City. I like his ability to only use one colour to express the emotion and feeling in the image.

He is a comedian, comic book creator, and is active in both television and film production. He recently finished producing the final chapter to his comic book Scud: The Disposable Assassin which is now available, as well as directing the second season of The Sarah Silverman Program.

I really like Schrab’s style of drawing, I think it has quite a graffiti style element to it, I like his skillful use of half tones all the way through “Scud”.

George Grosz was born Georg Ehrenfried Groß in Berlin, Germany but changed his name in 1916 out of a romantic enthusiasm for America[1] that originated in his early reading of the books of James Fenimore Cooper, Bret Harte and Karl May, and which he retained for the rest of his life.[2] (His artist friend and collaborator Helmut Herzfeld changed his name to John Heartfield at the same time.)

In 1914 Grosz volunteered for military service; like many other artists, he embraced the first world war as “the war to end all wars”, but he was quickly disillusioned and was given a discharge after hospitalization in 1915. In January 1917 he was drafted for service, but in May he was discharged as permanently unfit.[3]

Grosz was arrested during the Spartakus uprising in January 1919, but escaped using fake identification documents; he joined the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) in the same year. In 1921 Grosz was accused of insulting the army, which resulted in a 300 German Mark fine and the destruction of the collection Gott mit uns (“God with us”), a satire on German society. Grosz left the KPD in 1922 after having spent five months in Russia and meeting Lenin and Trotsky, because of his antagonism to any form of dictatorial authority.

In his drawings, usually in pen and ink which he sometimes developed further with watercolor, Grosz did much to create the image most have of Berlin and the Weimar Republic in the 1920s. Corpulent businessmen, wounded soldiers, prostitutes, sex crimes and orgies were his great subjects. His draftsmanship was excellent although the works he is best known for adopt a deliberately crude form of caricature. His oeuvre includes a few absurdist works, such as “Remember Uncle August the Unhappy Inventor” which has buttons sewn on it,[4] and also includes a number of erotic artworks.[5]

Bitterly anti-Nazi, Grosz left Germany in 1932, a year before Hitler came to power, and was invited to teach at the Art Students League of New York in 1933, where he would teach intermittently until 1955. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1938. Although a softening of his style had been apparent since the late 1920s, Grosz’s work turned toward a sentimental romanticism in America, a change generally seen as a decline.[6]

He continued to exhibit regularly. He painted Cain, or Hitler in Hell (1944), showing the dead attacking Hitler in Hell, and in 1946 he published his autobiography, A Little Yes and a Big No. In the 1950s he opened a private art school at his home and also worked as Artist in Residence at the Des Moines Art Center. Grosz was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1954. Though he had US citizenship, he resolved to return to Berlin, where he died on 6 July 1959 from the effects of falling down a flight of stairs after a night of drinking.[7]

Derf is the pseudonym of American artist John Backderf, most famous for the comic strip The City, which has appeared in a number of alternative newspapers since 1990.

Backderf grew up in Richfield, Ohio, and was a school friend/classmate of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, which he recounts in the comic book My Friend Dahmer.

Backderf is one of the most widely published alternative cartoonists in the country. His comic strip, THE CITY, appears regularly in over 50 weekly newspapers. It debuted in the now-defunct Cleveland Edition in 1990 and quickly spread to papers coast-to-coast, including: The Village Voice, The Chicago Reader, Cleveland Scene, Miami New Times, Houston Press, Pittsburgh City Paper, The Providence Phoenix, and Washington City Paper.

He grew up in Richfield, Ohio, a small farm town south of Cleveland and attended high school with serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, which he later recounted in his comic book My Friend Dahmer, which was nominated for an Eisner Award in 2002. Following a brief stint at art school, Derf worked for a year on the back of a garbage truck, an experience that was the basis for his graphic novel, Trashed, which was also nominated for an Eisner.

He eventually returned to college, this time to Ohio State University, and for three years, he was the controversial and popular staff cartoonist for the school paper, The Lantern. In 1996 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the OSU School of Journalism, one of but 6 members.

After graduation, he worked as a cartoonist-illustrator for the Palm Beach Post, the Cleveland Plain Dealer and the Akron Beacon Journal. He has won over 50 awards for his newspaper work, including a prestigious Bronze Medal from the Society of Newspaper Design. He was a member of the newsroom team for the Akron Beacon Journal that was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1995.

He has contributed to many well-known national publications, including Playboy, The Wall St. Journal and Progressive Magazine. His manic images have also graced posters, t-shirts and CD covers.

His work has been displayed in many galleries and museums both here and abroad. In 1995, he had a large solo show at Altered Image Gallery in Cleveland and in 1999 the Akron Art Museum put on a retrospective of his work, titled Apocalyptic Giggles: The Industrial Cartoon Humor of Derf.

Of his many book projects, his most recent are: The City: The World’s Most Grueling Comic Strip (SLG Publishing, 2003), Attitude: The New Subversive Political Cartoonists (NBM, 2002), Trashed (SLG Publishing, 2002) and My Friend Dahmer (Derfcity Comics, 2002). Of the last two, TimeMagazine.com says, “The funniest book of the year… followed by the spookiest.”

I really like Derfs work and I think he has a fantastic sense of humor which translates through his work very well. I especially like reversed images where the background is black, I also like the type he uses as it looks hand drawn but I am not sure wether it is or not.

WILL EISNER was born William Erwin Eisner on March 6, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York. By the time of his death on January 3, 2005, following complications from open heart surgery, Eisner was recognized internationally as one of the giants in the field of sequential art, a term he coined.

In a career that spanned nearly seventy years and eight decades — from the dawn of the comic book to the advent of digital comics — he truly was the ‘Orson Welles of comics’ and the ‘father of the Graphic Novel’. He broke new ground in the development of visual narrative and the language of comics and was the creator of The Spirit, John Law, Lady Luck, Mr. Mystic, Uncle Sam, Blackhawk, Sheena and countless others.

One of the comic industry’s most prestigious awards, The Eisner Award, is named after him. Recognized as the ‘Oscars’ of the American comic book business, the Eisners are presented annually before a packed ballroom at Comi-Con International in San Diego, America’s largest comics convention.

Wizard magazine named Eisner “the most influential comic artist of all time.” Michael Chabon’s Pulitzer-prize winning novel Kavalier and Clay is based in good part on Eisner. Also in 2002, Eisner received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Federation for Jewish Culture, only the second such honor in the organization’s history, presented by Pulitzer-prize winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman.

I really like Eisners work, I own 2 of his books and the artwork on every page is fantastic. I like his work in just black and white but his stuff with half tones is also very good, especially his pen and wash.

Ryan Ottley (also known as Uncle WYA) is an American comic book artist and penciller. He is best known for work on Image Comics‘ Invincible. Ottley is the artist and co-creator of the webcomic strip “Ted Noodleman: Bicycle Delivery Boy“, and it was through this webstrip that Robert Kirkman first encountered Ottley’s work and then offered him the job of penciling Invincible.

Ottley’s work is mostly admired by his fans and contemporaries for his use of caricature and ability to dance the line between simple realism and cartooning. Contrary to this, Ottley’s early amateur work was quite detailed when he started drawing portraits at age sixteen. His sketches still retain a broader use of hatching and rendering, although he has also been noted for what some label absurd and often humorous sketches.

I first saw Ottley’s work when looking for robert Kirkman Images, one of my favourite comic artists, I am a avid fan of The Walking Dead of which he is co-creator. I really like his charcters and his way of shading.
